Things To Know About Albuquerque

Red or Green? is a very important question.

So important, in fact, that it’s the official state question.  It refers to whether you’d like red or green chiles in your dish.  Red may be better known across the country, but green is delicious, and is the state food.  You also have the option to get both, if you want!

Microsoft was founded in Albuquerque.

People remember Washington as the location for Microsoft headquarters, but the company was actually based in Albuquerque for the first four years of existence.  The Altair microcomputer was the device that started the company’s meteoric rise.

So, so many famous people were born or raised here.

Jeff Bezos, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Neil Patrick Harris, Freddie Prinze Jr, Vivian Vance, Minka Kelly…they are all from Albuquerque.  The list also includes Demi Lovato, Blake Swihart, Jim Everett, and Ernie Pyle.

Albuquerque loves the environment.

It’s been listed one of the greenest cities in the country by both Forbes magazine and Popular Science.  With a great public transportation system and a well-developed recycling program, it’s clear that the people of Albuquerque are willing to do their part.

The Sandia Pueblo dates back to the 15th century.

Sandia is the Spanish word for watermelon, a fitting name since the pueblo glows watermelon pink at sunset.  3000 people lived there when the Spanish arrived in 1539, though only 441 existed by 1742.
