The antiquity of Albuquerque
Albuquerque celebrated its tricentennial in 2006. However, its origins go even further. Under the command of General Francisco de Coronado, the first Spanish explorers reached Albuquerque in 1540. In 1706, there was a well-established villa on the Rio Grande’s banks. The built manor was presented to the Duke of Albuquerque in Spain and it was given the name La Villa de Albuquerque. The first “r” was dropped over the years, establishing Albuquerque as it is today.
